How do I get a web site?
ok. I am a computer/internet twit. please help.
I have a business and thinking about having a web site, but I can’t get my head around all this talk of domain names, web hosting, etc. Will someone please state in very short, plain english what it is I need to know in order to have a web site (excluding web design. I’ll deal with that later) and perhaps an approximation of price.
Thank You.
oops, my question was too vague.
I have a very small business and want a web site to advertise, sell/receive payment and send/receive business email. what I need to know is just the basic, bare, essensials for getting a web site up and going in regards the internet (web design info, though appreciated, is not needed
)
… what is a domain name? how do I get a domain name? what is web hosting? Is it best to hire a professional to deal with this? ???
Thanks folks.
Thanks, Spoolified and others. Those were the anwers I needed to know.
Sorry, I am an Answers newby and can’t vote.
To have a professional looking business website you need 3 basic things.
A domain name: This is the address people will type in to get to your page (www.yourcompanyname.com) you pay normally $5 – $35 per year for this service depending on where you go. You can get this from what is called an Internet Registrar. This company should be licensed with InterNic. Stick with the big name companies and shop around by price.
A web host: This company puts your page on the internet. In basic terms they hold the webpage design on a server at their location and link your design with the domain name you have registered. Be prepared to pay at least $5-20 a month for this service. Cost of this service varies by how much traffic your site gets. Again stick with the big name companies. You can always move later once you get the hang on this.
A design: Check with your designer to see if it is your job to get the design to the web host, or if they will handle it for you. You say you will handle this later but don’t skimp on this detail. Don’t try and do it yourself DONT get your cousin’s 16 yr old son who knows some Photoshop to do it. If you want it to look professional, look in your area for a reputable web design service or an experienced freelancer. Look at their portfolios closely. Shop around by price and by quality of design. Good design starts at about $100 a page. A good design company can also handle all of the domain and hosting options for you for a fee.
Lots of places claim to be an all around “website-in-a-box” solution. If you have no clue what you are doing, this may be a good option, but you will pay more and the quality may be low. Be sure to do your research, read reviews and don’t commit to anything you are unsure of.
Good luck
